Buttonbush

PLANT INFO:

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)

  • Multi-stemmed shrub with pointed blade-like leaves that occur in pairs or in threes.

  • In late summer tiny white to pale pink flowers bloom in dense spherical clusters with a fringe of yellow pistils, resembling a pin cushion.

  • Brown masses of seeds remain through the winter.

  • The seeds become food for ducks and other waterbirds, and the flower’s nectar is of special value to native bees, honey bees and bumble bees and also attracts butterflies.

  • Grows in swamps, prairie swales and marshes and prefers moist soil and partial shade.

  • New York native.
