Buttonbush
PLANT INFO:
Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)
-
Multi-stemmed shrub with pointed blade-like leaves that occur in pairs or in threes.
-
In late summer tiny white to pale pink flowers bloom in dense spherical clusters with a fringe of yellow pistils, resembling a pin cushion.
-
Brown masses of seeds remain through the winter.
-
The seeds become food for ducks and other waterbirds, and the flower’s nectar is of special value to native bees, honey bees and bumble bees and also attracts butterflies.
-
Grows in swamps, prairie swales and marshes and prefers moist soil and partial shade.
-
New York native.
