Tall clump-forming plant with dark green lance-shaped leaves.

Large, loosely branched flower heads composed of disk shaped deep purple flowers bloom in late summer.

The flowers attract butterflies and native bees, and the seed heads attract birds.

Grows in moist meadows and is more common near the coast.
